Acrylic Paint Cafe'

I have found that for painting masks using acrylic paint works best. I struggled for years figuring out how to dispense the paint and I find this way to be the most organized: I open an Acrylic Paint Cafe' on which the paint is in little paint containers on a counter that I stand behind. The paints can either be mixed (by me) or the students can help themselves to ONE color at a time, and they don't get another color unless they return the color they have at their seat. The student take their owns brushes and water and it seems to work out pretty seamless.

It's that Time of Year Again!!! MAEA Youth Art Month

Each year I pick six awesome art students from South Row School and they get hung in the Boston Transportation Building for the Month of March, along with many other pieces from K-12 students throughout the state of Massachusetts

Grade 4 1 Point Perspective

I started with a rectangle they could trace in the middle of their paper and then built off that. This was pretty ambitious but they came out great!

New Year New Art!

The 3rd graders created a paper quilt using a certain color scheme for their class while only using squares, rectangles, and triangles!!!

MAEA Winner!!!

ANUSHA NAIK from South Row Elementary School won best of show in the Grade 3 category at the Mass Art Education Association’s Youth Art Month annual all-state exhibit this Month at the Boston Transportation Building

Did some "Batik" with Grade 3!

First students drew leaves 
large on a 9x12 paper and went over lines with sharpie.
I emphasized "overlapping."
Then they "drew" over their 
lines onto muslin with with glue.
Next came the painting with watered down acrylic paint.
After they dried I soaked the fabric, removed the glue, and ironed them!

"Summa" Stuff

I read on pintrest (of course) that you could wash your scissors in the dishwasher. Well I brought home my whole box of classroom scissors and washed them. When I was cleaning out my art room in June I found scissors in the craziest places! Oh those students!

I really want a kiln... so I did this! Art teachers - What do you think?

Grade 1 Animal Drawing

Students each got a small sandwich bag with a plastic toy animal in it

Next students did a drawing WITHOUT looking in the bag!  They had just a white paper and thin sharpie.










The next part of this drawing exercise was to take
the animal out of the bag, set up the animal in front
of them and do a BLIND contour drawing
WITHOUT LOOKING at the PAPER this time!
The last drawing was done by just doing both:
looking at the animal AND the paper


They cut out the animals a little bigger than their drawing and created their backgrounds. I love the effect!! 

MAEA work heading to Boston for the YAM annual show! I will be helping hang this show next weekend.

Wrapping up the term!

Grade 4 has been doing plaster casting, after looking at Theo Jenson's "Strandbeests"!

Process! Wayne Thiebaud grade 3

Students stopped after they colored the "frosting" with cray pas.  SO hard to see shadows on our desks, so students put up their artwork on the white board, in the middle of drawing to have a look from far away!

New Year in Art Room!!

Above are pears the second graders  did from a small photo of a pear. We talked about shading with these three different mediums.

In third grade we looked at "the False Mirror" by Rene' Magritte and created our own surreal landscape within the eye. We kept our focus on foreground middle ground and background.

In fourth grade we look at the piece by Ethan Murrow at the Boston 

ICA titled: Seastead and created a 1 point perspective sharpie drawing!
